The game draws heavily from both the plot and aesthetic elements of film noire, stylistic films made popular in the 1940s and 1950s. The game uses a distinctive colouring-style, but in homage to film noir it includes the option to play the game in black-and-white. The game engages in taking position as a Los Angeles Police Department detective and solving real time cases across various crime desks.
The game blends investigative elements such as mystery and crime solving, with fast-paced action sequences, including on-foot and car chases, hand-to-hand combat, interrogations and gunfights. The player can travel on foot, as well as in various vehicles. When the player is interrogating suspects and witnesses, the player must listen to the story that he or she gives.
